The defender joined Blues from local rivals Aston Villa in August 2007 in a £2m deal.
The 23-year-old signed a three year contract, with a two year option.
Ridgewell joined Villa as 15-year-old after spending six years as a youngster at West Ham United.
He made his first team debut for Villa in 2003 against Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup, before going on to make more than 90 appearances for the Clarets - and scoring six goals.
The 6 feet two inch tall player is an excellent header of the ball and has a powerful left footed shot.
He made his debut for Blues in their opening game of the 2007/08 season against Chelsea, where he captained the side.
